If You Don’t Have Problems, Create Some

Problem solving is one of the most powerful tools we have available to close any performance gap for which we do not know the cause. By closing these gaps and then keeping them closed, we elevate our organisations to a new level of performance.

Continuous improvement requires that we keep on getting better all of the time. This means achieving higher levels of performance as measured by the various performance indicators we use in our organisations. It is therefore vital that once we achieve and sustain new levels of performance, we challenge ourselves further by establishing new performance targets. When we do this, we are essentially creating new performance gaps, and if we do not know how to close these gaps without further analysis, we have essentially created new problems to solve.

If your organisation does not have many problems, ask yourself the following questions:

  • Are your performance standards too low?
  • Do you have a large enough suite of performance measures?
  • Are you perhaps not measuring the right things?

The pursuit of perfection means that no matter how well we are doing, we can always do better.
